The Silent Witness

Four-year-old Lula McLean`s life is quiet silent witness and uneventful before the Civil War comes to her family`s broad, tree-lined front yard in Manassas, Virginia. Attached to her family, their land, silent witness and her little rag doll, Lula is a small, silent observer to both the beginning silent witness and the end of the Civil War. After General Beauregard`s initial battle in April of 1861, he chooses the McLean plantation as his headquarters. Lula is overwhelmed by the hordes of grey-uniformed Confederate soldiers who arrive at the McLean plantation that July. Shortly after, the McLeans move to safety almost 150 miles south, to a hamlet called Appomattox Court House. There, Lula`s family makes do for more than four years, until the war officially ends--in their parlor on April 9th, 1865, with her beloved rag doll as a witness.
